Tony Vaccaro: Retrospective – 70 Years of Photography (Willy-Brandt-Haus Berlin)

From 22 November 2012 until 27 January 2013, Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus Berlin presents a retrospective with 100 photos spanning seven decades by the US photographer Tony Vaccaro. Not the least in Germany, Vaccaro – who will turn 90 years on 20 December this year – is known best for his pictures from the Second World War and post-war Germany: since the Normandy landings in 1944, he fought in the European theatre of war. Until 1949, he worked for Weekend, a supplement to the magazine Stars and Stripes. After his return to the USA, he was photographer for magazines such as Life, Look and Flair.

In 1926, Vaccaro’s family moved back to their Italian homeland in Bonefro. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the family fled back to the USA. In 1942, Vaccaro bought his first camera, an Argus C-3. During his years in Europe, he made more than 10.000 pictures; their historic and documental value is still fascinating. Tony Vaccaro lives and works in Long Island, New York, and will be present on the occasion of the exhibition’s opening.

  1. Daer all, I am interested in warphotography and I would like to know if there are any books available and for sale from Tony Vaccaro (with indication of price and transport costs to Belgium).

  2. Dear Maria Wouters,
In 2001, Taschen published “Tony Vaccaro: Entering Germany 1944-1949” (192 pages, ISBN 978-3822859087). All the texts (including the captions) are in English, German and French. Used ones are usually available between 15 and 20 €, e.g. at Amazon Marketplace. You might have to contact the vendor if (s)he is offering international sales. I bought this book myself and the photos are historically very interesting.
    Cheers
    Martin Bayer
