Aircraft Carrier to be Auctioned: HMS Invincible

Did you ever wanted to have something really special? The time is long gone to impress somebody with a simple yacht. Maybe this offer could be interesting then: since 28 November 2010, the United Kingdom is selling its aircraft carrier HMS Invincible by auction. In service since 1980, the ship lived up to its name by staying undefeated and is now awaiting the cutting torch, as it will be sold as scrap only.

Jürgen Graetz: Erinnerungen (Memories)

As already announced here, on 29 October 2010, the exhibition “Erinnerungen” (memories) with photographs of Jürgen Graetz was successfully opened in the premises of the Berlin-based political consultancy republik movida GmbH. The welcome address was given by Lars Lindemann MdB (FDP) in the presence of the artist.

Wartist presents: “Memories” by Jürgen Graetz

Bruce Conner: The 1970s (Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna)

From 8 October 2010 until 30 January 2011, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, Austria, presents the extensive exhibition Bruce Conner. The 70s” with works of the US artist. Not the least, the almost ruminant video work “Crossroads” is on show, a 1976 b&w short film of 36 minutes length about the first underwater nuclear weapons test on the Bikini Atoll.

New Stalin Memorial Unveiled

Already on 5 May 2010, a memorial for Stalin was unveiled in the south-Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia. While it is of no special artistic importance (it could have been put on this way some 60 years ago; maybe there was even an old bust to be used for a mould?), it is even more so politically.

Opening: Dogs in Wars – Dogs as Weapons (Osnabrück)

From 28 January 2010, the Erich Maria Remarque-Friedenszentrum in Osnabruck presents with “Hunde im Krieg – Hunde als Waffe” (Dogs in Wars – Dogs as Weapons) an exhibition that addresses quite a specific subject: the use of “man’s best friend” in wars.

Stalin bust gets a new home at “Blind Alley of Communism”

According to the Ukrainian website censor.net, judge Victor Poprevich, living in the mining city of Donezk (Ukraine), put up two sculptures of Lenin and Stalin in front of his home – having said that, setting them on the ground is all but respectful. The official name of the street to his house is “Olimpijskaja”, but Poprevich renamed it quite fittingly into “Blind Alley of Communism”.
