Media Art Festival “transmediale.11” (Berlin)

In 1988, the media art festival transmediale was founded under its name “VideoFilmFest” in the periphery of the film festival Berlinale; in 1998, it recieved its current name. There is not only a conference, but also an open competition, an exhibition and various side events. This year’s subject is called “RESPONSE:ABILITY”. In 2011, too, several works address war.

Opening: “Manifest Destiny” at Moeller Fine Art (Berlin)

Moeller Fine Art shows in its Berlin gallery the multifaceted group exhibition “Manifest Destiny” with photographs, installations, sculptures, collages and drawings by Mildred Howard (USA), Tom Molloy (Ireland) and Simon Norfolk (Nigeria/UK). The title refers to the homonymous 19th-century-doctrine that was also used to legitimate the territorial expansion of the USA as God’s will.

Christo wraps AA tower (on an Austrian stamp)

Christo wrapped one of the massive World-War-II AA towers in the Austrian capital – at least on a stamp that had been issued on 15 April 2009 with a nominal value of 0,55€ with an edition of 300,000 prints.

Exhibition: War and Medicine (Dresden)

The Deutsche Hygiene-Museum (German Hygiene Museum) in Dresden presents from 4 April to 9 August 2009 the comprehensive exhibition “Krieg und Medizin” (War and Medicine). It has been organised in cooperation with the Wellcome Collection in London, where the exhibition could be seen from 22 November 2008 to 15 February 2009. The multifaceted Ausstellung exposition includes 450 exhibits on 800m²: photos, surgical instruments, prostheses, documents, but also video installations, paintings and other works of art. A visit is highly recommended.

Embedded Art – Art in the Name of Security

On January 23rd 2009 at 1900h, the exhibition Embedded Art – Art in the Name of Security in the Akademie der Künste (Academy of the Arts) will open in Berlin.1 The exhibition’s concept was designed by the artists’ group BBM (Beobachter der Bediener von Maschinen, Observers of Operators of Machines) that exists since 1989, together with the Akademie der Künste.
